No Roaming charges in India Starting October 2013: Kapil Sibal

The news of the Indian Government planing to introduce no roaming policy, had been swirling for a long time, but ? Well, there is no doubt about it now as, the Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Kapil Sibal has announced recently that, free roaming will certainly be in place from October 2013 onwards. The facility was announced along with the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2012.

 

Mobile users will surely welcome this facility with open arms, as they will be able to take incoming calls free of charge and make outgoing calls at local rates, when on roaming. The facility which was brought up along with NTP in May of last year, was given a thumbs up by the Union Cabinet.

Although the plan is set to go into motion, this October, exact date of implementation is not known yet. However, once the plan is in effect, this will mean the end STD rates. The telecom operators are not to happy with the government's decision and understandably so, as roaming charges does account for a major chunk in revenues. This doesn't change the fact that the no roaming facility will be in effect from October, onwards.

Earlier Gizbot did report about Aircel' s tariff plan, 'One Nation, One Rate', which completely removed roaming charges on incoming calls. There were hints that the plan might have been introduced, in response the Government of India' s plans to implement no roaming charges policy.
