Samsung Testing Brain Controlled Technique to Play Around With Tablets

Samsung's latest flagship device - Galaxy S4 has futuristic features (Eye Scroll and Air Gesture), which let you scroll through pages using your eyes. The South Korean giant has collaborated with researchers at University of Texas on a project that could bring out brain controlled tablets in future. The team comprises of Samsung researchers and Roozbeh Jafari, an assistant Professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas.

The company's Emerging Technology Lab, is said to be working on how people use their thoughts to control an app or a particular song. The researchers are currently using Samsung Galaxy Note 800, a 10-inch HD tablet with Quad-Core processor built into it. The company sees great potential this in futuristic technology. Basically, the technology uses ECG -controlled technique, and going by demonstration shown (see image below), it is quite possible to see this method of controlling a tablet gets green light by folks over at Samsung.

"The project fits into a broader effort by researchers to find more ways for communicating with small devices like smartphones. "This is one of the ways to expand the type of input you can have and still stick the phone in the pocket," as per Robert Jacob, a researcher at Tufts University.

"Several years ago, a small keypad was the only input modality to control the phone, but nowadays the user can use voice, touch, gesture, and eye movement to control and interact with mobile devices," as per Insoo Kim, researcher at Samsung.

He [Insoo Kim] further says "Adding more input modalities will provide us with more convenient and richer ways of interacting with mobile devices".

In 2011, IBM predicted that in the next five year, one could see mind-controlled smartphone to flourish. With Samsung aggressively pushing this brain-controlled interaction with 'connected devices'; it is to be seen whether technology like the above mentioned one has any synthesis in general. In future, you even do not need to have password set on your smartphone; a blink of an eye is enough to secure your back account too.
