BSNL Start Issuing 5G-ready SIM Cards in Select Markets
BSNL has introduced 5G-ready SIM cards in a few states, marking a significant step in its upcoming network upgrade. The new SIM cards are available in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala. This move aims to enhance connectivity and offer faster internet speeds to users in these regions in the near future.
Customers can visit BSNL stores or authorised dealers to get their hands on these SIM cards. The company has assured that the transition from 4G to 5G will be seamless for users; however, as of now, BSNL doesn't offer a 5G network and is slowly rolling out a 4G network across the country.

Compared to the previous versions issued by BSNL, the new 5G-ready SIM card has a distinctive look with a logo that says BSNL and 5G ready in India's tricolour. It comes in three sizes, regular, which can be transformed into micro and nano, and can be used on either a feature phone that accepts full-sized SIM cards and also on modern smartphones that take nano SIM.
What is the Significance of a 5G-ready SIM Card?
Although BSNL doesn't have a 5G network at this moment, the new 5G-ready SIM card ensures that if and when BSNL updates its network to 5G, users can experience 5G speeds without requiring a new SIM card, making it future-proof. This is similar to how Airtel and Jio also rolled out their 5G networks, where most 4G users could experience high-speed low-latency 5G internet without going through the hassle of upgrading to a new SIM card just to access the 5G connectivity.
As of now, there is no information if BSNL is allowing existing users to upgrade to a 5G-ready SIM. However, the telecom operator is issuing new 5G capable SIM cards in the aforementioned markets for users who are onboarding the BSNL network by either getting a new connection or porting from another network.
One of the key benefits of 5G technology is its ability to support a larger number of devices simultaneously without compromising on speed or connectivity. This makes it ideal for densely populated areas where network congestion is a common issue. Compared to 4G, the 5G network is not only faster, but it also offers low latency which is good for tasks like online gaming and streaming.
