Buying a New SIM Card? Aadhaar-Based Verification Is Now Mandatory in India

Getting a new SIM card in India just got a little more complicated. The government has introduced Aadhaar-based biometric verification as a mandatory step for purchasing a new mobile connection. This means that instead of simply providing a voter ID, passport, or other government-issued documents, users will now have to verify their identity using Aadhaar-linked biometrics.

The move is aimed at preventing fraud and stopping the misuse of SIM cards obtained through fake documents. With the rising cases of cybercrime and financial fraud linked to unauthorized mobile connections, authorities are tightening the process to make it more secure.

Stricter SIM Registration Rules

Along with the Aadhaar verification requirement, the government is also implementing stricter monitoring of multiple SIM registrations. A centralized system will now track how many SIM cards are registered under an individual's name to prevent people from using different identities to obtain multiple connections.

Additionally, telecom retailers are now banned from selling SIM cards without completing the Aadhaar biometric verification process. Any retailer caught violating this rule could face serious penalties, reinforcing the government's push for tighter security in the telecom sector.

New Photo Verification Requirement

If Aadhaar-based biometric verification wasn't enough, customers buying a new SIM card may also have to provide photos taken from ten different angles. This extra step is being introduced as a fraud prevention measure, making it harder for individuals to create fake identities for SIM card purchases.

Why the Government is Making These Changes

The decision to tighten SIM registration rules follows a review by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which found a surge in financial scams and cybercrimes linked to fake SIM cards. Authorities discovered that multiple SIM cards were being registered to single devices, making it easier for criminals to evade detection.

In response, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has directed the DoT to work with law enforcement agencies and use AI-driven tools to track down and penalize offenders. These stricter guidelines mark a major step toward reducing mobile-related fraud and strengthening cybersecurity in India.
