BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G Goes Live: 98,000 Towers, Cloud-Native Design, and 5G Future

India has reached a new telecom milestone. On its 25th anniversary, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched the country’s first fully indigenous 4G network, designed to be future-proof and ready for 5G upgrades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the rollout, calling it a step toward digital self-reliance.

BSNL Launches India’s 1st Indigenous 4G Network, Built to Be 5G-Ready

A Homegrown 4G Stack

For decades, India’s mobile networks relied on foreign technology. With this launch, that dependency has shifted. The new “Swadeshi 4G” stack is entirely Indian:

  • Core network: Built by C-DOT
  • Radio Access Network (RAN): Developed by Tejas Networks
  • Integration and deployment: Led by TCS

The network was developed in just 22 months. BSNL says nearly 98,000 towers have already been installed across the country, including remote villages and hilly regions where connectivity has often lagged.

Built With 5G in Mind

The new infrastructure follows a cloud-native design, meaning it can be scaled and upgraded more easily than earlier networks. In practical terms, that makes it “5G ready” without requiring major hardware overhauls.

So far, more than 92,000 live sites are supporting around 22 million people, including 2 million first-time internet users. The network already manages about 4 petabytes of data every day.

Impact Beyond Connectivity

BSNL’s indigenous network is expected to drive more than just faster downloads. Officials highlight several key outcomes:

  • Digital sovereignty: Reduced reliance on foreign systems and stronger control of critical communications.
  • Employment: More localized manufacturing and deployment work is creating jobs and strengthening India’s telecom supply chain.
  • Export potential: Countries in Asia and Africa have expressed interest in adopting the Indian-built stack.
  • Financial recovery: BSNL has recorded two consecutive profitable quarters after 17 years of losses, which the company links partly to confidence in homegrown technology.

What It Means for Citizens

The benefits are expected to reach deep into rural and underserved areas:

  • Education: Rural children can attend online classes more reliably.
  • Healthcare: Telemedicine becomes more accessible with better connectivity.
  • Agriculture: Farmers can get real-time updates on crop prices and weather.
  • Defense: Secure communication channels are strengthened for the armed forces.

India’s Broader 5G and 6G Plans

India has already rolled out one of the fastest 5G networks globally. Since October 2022, operators have installed nearly 4.9 lakh base stations across all 28 states and 8 Union Territories. According to the GSMA, India alone accounted for more than half of global 5G coverage growth in 2024.

Looking ahead, the government is pushing the Bharat 6G Mission, which aims for global deployment by 2030. Initiatives include 100 dedicated 5G/6G labs, the Bharat 6G Alliance, and funding for more than 100 R&D projects.
