Elon Musk’s Starlink Targets Rural Households for India Satellite Internet
Elon Musk's SpaceX is preparing to launch its Starlink satellite internet services in India. The Indian space authority has already provided the necessary licence for Starlink to begin commercial operations in the country.
At the India Mobile Congress, Parnil Urdhwareshe, Starlink India's market access director, highlighted the company's focus on rural areas. He stated that most of Starlink's global customers are rural households lacking reliable broadband.

Focus on Rural Areas
"Most of Starlink's users worldwide are residential customers in rural areas - people for whom we were often the first real broadband option," said Parnil Urdhwareshe at the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi. "Serving rural users is fundamental to the mission of Starlink," he added.
Urdhwareshe explained that in urban centres like Mumbai, Starlink can serve only a small portion compared to rural regions. He estimated that urban users would be about one-tenth of those in rural areas. "Our goal everywhere has been to complement existing connectivity and ensure high-quality internet access in both urban and rural regions," he said.
Starlink aims to bridge the digital divide by providing high-speed internet to underserved areas. This initiative aligns with their mission to offer reliable connectivity where traditional broadband options are limited or unavailable.
The introduction of Starlink services in India could significantly enhance internet accessibility, particularly for remote communities. By focusing on these areas, Starlink seeks to improve digital inclusion and empower more people with internet access.
Expected Launch
Starlink is expected to launch its services by early 2026 in India. Initially, it aims to offer a bandwidth capacity of 600 to 700 Gbps, which should cater to around 30,000 to 50,000 users. However, Starlink's long-term vision is much broader. By 2027, it intends to expand its bandwidth capacity to 3 Tbps, enabling service provision to millions across India, including remote rural areas.
