Starlink Reportedly Cleared for India Launch! Elon Musk’s Satellite Internet Set to Shake Up Jio and Airtel
Elon Musk's Starlink has reportedly received the necessary approvals from India's Department of Telecom to launch its satellite internet services in the country. Starlink, a service by SpaceX, operates globally in over 100 countries. According to Moneycontrol, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to Starlink. However, the company still needs to meet all licence conditions to obtain the "final licence."
"Yes, Starlink has been issued LoI by the Dot for GMPCS, VSAT and ISP licences in India," a government official reportedly told Moneycontrol. "The final licence will be given once Starlink is able to fulfil all licence conditions," the source reportedly added.

Starlink's Potential Impact on India's Broadband Market
The introduction of Starlink in India could significantly impact SpaceX's revenue. Capturing just 1% of India's consumer broadband market might generate nearly $1 billion annually for SpaceX. The LoI allows SpaceX to soon demonstrate its services in India, similar to OneWeb's existing satellite broadband offerings. OneWeb, with Airtel as a major stakeholder, already provides satellite internet services to businesses and communities in India.
Both Airtel and Jio have expressed interest in leveraging Starlink's technology to expand internet access in rural schools, healthcare facilities, and remote areas lacking conventional infrastructure. Airtel plans to integrate Starlink into its network and explore opportunities for SpaceX to use Airtel's telecom infrastructure within India.
Trade Implications and Strategic Moves
A report from The Washington Post suggests that there may be a trade aspect influencing the swift approval of Starlink services in India. Indian officials have expedited Starlink's entry as it might support broader trade discussions with the US. "It's not likely to be an explicit element of the trade negotiations with the US, but the Indian side sees this as an important lubricant that facilitates a deal," an Indian official told The Washington Post.
Earlier this year, both Jio and Airtel signed agreements with SpaceX's Starlink to introduce its services to Indian users. This agreement was announced in March 2025 and was contingent on SpaceX obtaining necessary approvals for selling Starlink in India, which it now possesses.
Starlink's Technological Advantages
Starlink aims to deliver high-speed internet via a vast network of low Earth orbit satellites. Unlike traditional cable-based services, it offers fast and reliable access even in remote areas by connecting users through a constellation of satellites that relay data between Earth and space.

When launched in India, Starlink is expected to provide download speeds between 25 Mbps and 220 Mbps and upload speeds ranging from 5 Mbps to 20 Mbps. Latency is anticipated between 25 and 50 milliseconds, supporting activities like streaming, gaming, and video calls.
This satellite-based internet solution is particularly promising for regions where setting up traditional broadband infrastructure is challenging due to geographical constraints or remoteness. Currently operational in multiple countries, Starlink continues expanding its satellite network for enhanced global coverage.
Jio announced plans during its partnership announcement with Starlink that once SpaceX launches its services in India, it will offer them through stores and online platforms. Similarly, Airtel mentioned potential sales of Starlink equipment at its stores while providing these services to businesses.
