Jio Reportedly Closes in on 6.88 Million FWA Users, Set to Top Global Charts

Reliance Jio is on the verge of becoming the world's largest fixed-wireless access (FWA) service provider. The telecom giant has successfully launched 5G FWA services across India, amassing millions of customers. In May, Jio added 1.03 million new subscribers, bringing its total to 5.85 million, as per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). During the same period, Airtel gained approximately 182,458 subscribers.

ICICI Securities highlighted that T-Mobile's FWA subscriber base was at 6.85 million in March 2025. They predict that Jio will become the leading global FWA player by June 2025. The expansion of JioHome service is crucial for this growth, with a target to add over a million subscribers monthly. This strategy aims to leverage their 5G investments effectively.

Jio's Strategic Growth in FWA

The reclassification of FWA-UBR users as fixed wireline customers by TRAI was significant. By May 2025, the industry had an FWA user base of 7.4 million, excluding UBR connections. Of these, Jio accounted for 5.9 million subscribers. Including UBR users, Jio's subscriber base reached an impressive 6.88 million.

Jio has streamlined its broadband offerings under the JioHome brand, combining both fiber and AirFiber services for customers. This unified approach simplifies their service portfolio and enhances customer experience.

Monetising 5G Investments

For both Jio and Airtel, FWA represents a lucrative avenue to capitalise on their substantial investments in 5G technology. By consistently expanding their subscriber base through innovative services like JioHome, they aim to maintain a competitive edge in the telecom sector.
