Nokia Predicts 5G Dominance with 5.6 Billion Subscriptions by 2030

Nokia has revealed in its recent report, 'Global Network Traffic 2030,' that by the end of the decade, 5G subscriptions will account for nearly half of the world's total mobile subscriptions, reaching an estimated 5.6 billion.

5G: The New Norm

The telecom industry is witnessing a global rollout of 5G networks, and by 2030, it is poised to dominate over 4G. Nokia's report predicts that the total number of mobile subscriptions worldwide will grow from 8.5 billion to 10.3 billion by 2030. A substantial portion of this growth will be attributed to 5G subscriptions, making up over 50% of the total mobile subscriptions. Moreover, as the decade progresses, an overwhelming 92% of mobile subscriptions are expected to be on either 4G or 5G technology.

Rising Data Consumption

The Nokia report also sheds light on the evolving data consumption patterns. In a moderate scenario, it predicts that the global monthly usage per subscriber will be around 46.4GB per month by 2030. While this figure will vary significantly from country to country, it underscores the growing hunger for data-driven services and applications.

Video content, a major driver of mobile data traffic, is expected to maintain its dominance. In 2020, video applications contributed to a staggering 72% of global mobile data traffic. Looking ahead to 2030, video is projected to constitute 60% of all mobile traffic. This category encompasses content from social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as on-demand streaming services such as Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

Fixed Wireless Access

Fixed wireless access (FWA) subscriptions are on the rise, with Nokia's report predicting that global FWA connections will reach approximately 271 million by 2030. FWA employs wireless technology to deliver high-speed internet to fixed locations, eliminating the need for traditional wired connections like fiber optic cables. This approach offers a solution for providing internet connectivity in rural areas where laying down fiber infrastructure can be logistically challenging.

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, including India, is expected to lead the way in FWA subscriptions, with an estimated 121 million projected FWA connections by 2030.

A Promising Future for 5G and Connectivity

The telecom industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with 5G poised to become the primary mobile connectivity standard. This shift is not only changing how people access the internet but also redefining data consumption patterns. As more use cases for 5G are identified, the figures may continue to evolve, shaping a future where high-speed, reliable connectivity is the norm.
