Reliance Jio added 8.3 million customers in January, Airtel is still leading
The number of telephone subscribers in India declined from 1,190.67 million at the end of December 2017 to 1,175.01 million at the end of January 2018.
According to new data by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio Infocomm added 8.3 million customers in January, which is double than incumbents like Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea Cellular added 1.5 million, 1.2 million and 1.1 million new subscribers during the same month.
However, Bharti Airtel is still leading with 291.6 million subscribers on board followed by Vodafone 213 million and Idea Cellular with 197 million subscribers.
Meanwhile, the number of telephone subscribers in India declined from 1,190.67 million at the end of December 2017 to 1,175.01 million at the end of January 2018.
The data showed that wireless subscriber base declined by 1.33 percent to 115.19 crores, while the wireline subscriber base edged lower by 0.71 percent to 2.30 crore.
As on 31st January 2018, the private access service providers held 90.29 percent market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 9.71 percent.
The data also said that during the month of January 2018, Haryana service area showed maximum growth rate (0.96 percent) in wireless subscribers and Himachal Pradesh service areas showed maximum decline rate (7.99 percent ) in wireless subscribers during the month.
Furthermore, TRAI received 6.18 million requests were for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 338.41 million at the end of Dec-17 to 344.59 million at the end of January-18, since the implementation of MNP.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern and Western India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Rajasthan (about 28.69 million) followed by Maharashtra (about 24.56 million) service area.
In MNP Zone-II (Southern and Eastern India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Karnataka (about 35.27 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (about 30.15 million).
