Reliance Jio and Qualcomm Partner on CPE and 5G Radio Development
Indian telecommunications giant Reliance Jio has forged a strategic partnership with American chipmaker Qualcomm Technologies to advance its 5G capabilities and enhance last-mile connectivity. The collaboration unveiled during an industry conference hosted by Qualcomm, aims to develop consumer premises equipment (CPE), millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio products, and Wi-Fi 6 technology.
5G and the Digital Revolution

Shyam Mardikar, President and Group CTO Mobility at Reliance Jio, emphasized the transformative potential of 5G technology. He highlighted its role in improving connectivity and creating new opportunities in education, collaboration, and entertainment.
The Evolution of Wireless Networks
Mardikar explained the evolution of wireless networks in India. While 4G is focused on connectivity and providing proximity to data centers for computing, storage, and intelligence, 5G represents a convergence of higher spectrum, hyperconnectivity, and increased computational and storage capacity. This convergence paves the way for a new paradigm in last-mile communication.
Key Components of 5G Networks
Mardikar emphasized several key components that will empower 5G networks, including the programmability of networks, data analytics, edge and distributed computing, and robust security measures. These elements will facilitate intelligent decision-making and elevate the overall performance of 5G networks.
A Pioneering Partnership
Reliance Jio and Qualcomm's collaborative efforts extend beyond CPE and mmWave radio products. They previously announced their partnership in the development of cloud-native 5G infrastructure. This ecosystem aims to serve India and other regions, operating across mmWave and sub-6GHz frequency bands. Additionally, Qualcomm and Jio are collaborating to deploy 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services in India.
India's 5G Landscape
India's telecom industry is seeing the introduction of 5G FWA services by major operators such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Reliance Jio, in particular, has launched its commercial 5G fixed broadband service, JioAirFiber, in metropolitan areas like Delhi and several other cities.
