Reliance Jio Opposes The Way Elon Musk Wants To Bring Starlink Satellite Internet To India

Elon Musk is actively seeking a way to bring the Starlink service to India. However, India's prevalent laws and regulations will have to be relaxed to speed-track processes. Reliance Jio has openly opposed the way Musk has proposed.

World's richest man is facing opposition from Asia's wealthiest over the ways Starlink could start its operations in India. Internet via satellites would be immensely helpful to remote villages that currently lack reliable access to high-speed internet, Musk stressed.

Why Is Mukesh Ambani Against Elon Musk Over Starlink Entry In India?

Following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US this week, Elon Musk said he was keen to launch Starlink in India. The Internet service "can be incredibly helpful" in remote villages without internet or lacking high-speed services.

Mukesh Ambani hasn't opposed Starlink's entry into India. He has raised objections to the way Elon Musk wants to start operations in the country.

Musk wants to do away with the standard or prevalent government's distribution of satellite broadband spectrum. Starlink wants India to not auction the relevant spectrum but assign licenses in line with a global trend.

Elon Musk claims spectrum is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. An auction may impose geographical restrictions that will raise costs, Starlink said in letters made public by the Indian government this month.

Should Starlink Participate In Spectrum Auctions?

Every telecommunications company, currently operational in India, has participated in multiple auctions for spectrum. Be it from 2G, 3G, 4G, and even 5G, every generation of telecommunications standards has earned the government handsomely.

Currently, Reliance Jio is the only company to have nationwide 4G and even 5G licenses. Elon Musk wants to bypass the auction process. Starlink had already tried to wriggle its way into India by taking pre-bookings back in 2021 without participating in any auctions.

Spectrum allocation without auctions is a standard procedure in other parts of the world. Moreover, during India's public consultation on the satellite spectrum allocation, 48 of the 64 responses favored licensing.

If India succeeds in making satellite internet firms participate in auctions, other nations may follow suit. This would significantly increase costs and investments for these companies, which would, in turn, make subscription plans more expensive.

This is why Elon Musk's Starlink, Amazon's OneWeb, and others are cautious about entering India and starting a much-needed service that would certainly benefit remote corners of the country.

It is indeed strange that Starlink has been authorized for operations in 84 administrations around the world without participating in auctions. In other words, the company is obtaining low-cost licenses in many other countries but it may have to a substantial auction amount in India.
