Reliance Jio's ambitious rollout of its True 5G network across India is not just about faster internet speeds or improved connectivity. One of the less talked about, yet significant benefits is the potential enhancement of smartphone battery life.

During the company's Q2 FY25 earnings call, it was highlighted that the transition to a 5G network could lead to a more efficient use of smartphone batteries. This development is anticipated to be a boon for users, offering longer battery life on their devices, alongside the superior speed and connectivity that comes with 5G technology.

Jio's 5G Network Boosts Battery Life Significantly

Reliance Jio's announcement during its Q2 FY25 earnings call brings promising news for smartphone users, revealing that its True 5G network could extend battery life by an impressive 20 to 40 percent. The improvement stems from Jio's standalone (SA) architecture for 5G services, unlike the non-standalone (NSA) approach that relies on existing 4G infrastructure.

A crucial aspect of Jio's strategy is its smart spectrum management system, which allocates bandwidth based on application requirements. Kiran Thomas, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, stated that this could extend battery life by 20 to 40 percent. Additionally, Jio has implemented Voice over New Radio (VoNR) for its 5G communication, offering improved voice quality and faster call setup times.

Reliance Jio also incorporates several technological innovations to optimise its network further. These include layer management and time division duplex (TDD) interference management across spectrum bands.

In addition to these features, Reliance Jio's True 5G network offers improved location accuracy without solely depending on GPS. By using the angle of arrival, it can calculate location with an accuracy of up to 10 meters.
