Telecom Carriers Warn Against Misinformation Amidst Regulatory Concerns
Incumbent telecom giants like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have raised concerns over what they term "misinformation and falsehood" perpetuated by vested interests within the tech and internet sector.
This development comes on the heels of a letter submitted by over 100 startups and internet companies to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last month, expressing apprehensions regarding the potential overregulation of internet companies and Over-The-Top (OTT) services.

Startups' Letter to TRAI
The letter, endorsed by influential figures in the tech industry including MapmyIndia's Rohan Verma, Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma, and Practo's Shashank ND Singh, highlighted concerns that overregulation could have discriminatory implications for internet companies and OTT services. The tech leaders emphasized the importance of fostering innovation and the growth of startups in the digital landscape.
Cellular Operators Association of India's Response
In a swift response, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) addressed TRAI acting chairman Meenakshi Gupta with a letter dated October 4, 2023. The COAI expressed strong disagreement with the viewpoints presented in the startups' letter and labeled them as misleading and false.
The COAI urged the regulator not to lend credence to the submission and the signatures collected, asserting that the entire premise of the letter is grounded in deceit and misconceptions. According to the telecom body, the letter propagated falsehoods and argued against allowing price differentiation based on the type of content accessed on the internet, contending that it would undermine the fundamental principles upon which the internet has evolved and revolutionized connectivity.
The COAI went further to suggest that the letter's foundation is built upon misinformation, and it was used to garner support from various Indian internet companies. The telco group strongly maintained that supporting small OTT players and startups by exempting them from fair share charges would foster innovation and entrepreneurship, ensuring that these nascent ventures are not hindered.
A Controversy Unfolds
This debate has snowballed into a substantial controversy, particularly concerning the notion that substantial OTT players should compensate telecom service providers for deploying network infrastructure. Telecom companies argue that these large OTT players are essentially benefiting from network resources without contributing fairly.
As the industry grapples with these issues, the matter of regulating internet companies and OTT services continues to be a subject of intense debate, with stakeholders from all sides presenting their perspectives on the matter. TRAI will play a pivotal role in determining the regulatory framework for this burgeoning sector.
