Vi Launches Handset Theft And Loss Insurance Bundled With Prepaid Recharges In India: Get All the Details Here

Vi has introduced handset theft and loss insurance for prepaid users in India, bundling protection with select recharge plans. The cover applies to both Android and iOS smartphones, focuses on loss and theft rather than only damage, and offers insurance of up to Rs. 25,000.

The insurance is linked directly to the recharge instead of a separate policy purchase. Customers receive mobile data benefits along with insurance cover, and the validity of protection differs by pack. Vi states that claims are handled digitally, which is meant to cut paperwork and speed decisions.

Market context for Vi handset theft and loss insurance

Vi links the new handset theft and loss insurance offer to the rising cost of smartphone replacement. Industry estimates mentioned by Vi place typical mid-range replacement costs between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 25,000, which is the same range as the maximum insured amount under the new plans.

The company also refers to a May 2025 report from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. That report notes that about 85.5 percent of Indian households own at least one smartphone. Vi points to this high ownership level as a reason for extended handset theft and loss insurance options.

How Vi handset theft and loss insurance works for prepaid users

Vi explains that handset theft and loss insurance is integrated into its prepaid recharge packs, rather than sold through separate insurance channels. A digital-first claims process uses existing subscriber information, which is intended to simplify filing, reduce supporting documents and support quicker handling of theft or loss claims.

According to Vi, the handset theft and loss insurance market itself is projected to reach $2.6 billion in 2025, with nearly 14 percent annual growth. The company’s bundled model focuses on prepaid users who may find standalone insurance harder to access, while still tying cover to regular recharge behaviour.
