Vodafone Idea And AST SpaceMobile Join Forces To Launch Satellite Broadband Services In India
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a new partnership with AST SpaceMobile, a US-based satellite technology company, to introduce direct-to-device satellite broadband services across India.
This move is part of a broader effort to expand cellular connectivity in areas where building traditional telecom infrastructure is difficult or impractical.

No Hardware Changes Required for Access
The key detail that stands out in this partnership is the direct-to-smartphone capability. According to Vi, users will be able to access voice, video calls, and data services over 4G and 5G without needing any special hardware, software updates, or changes to their mobile devices. The idea is to fill coverage gaps in areas where ground-based towers can’t reach, like hilly terrains, dense forests, or disaster-prone zones.
The technology behind this is AST SpaceMobile’s SpaceMobile Satellite System, which uses a low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to deliver cellular broadband. This system is designed to work seamlessly with existing mobile networks, meaning users won’t need to switch telecom providers or activate a separate service.
How It Fits into India’s Connectivity Goals
Vi said the initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Digital India mission, aiming to provide consistent and inclusive internet access. While the satellite service is not intended to replace terrestrial networks, it will supplement existing infrastructure and extend coverage to previously unreachable zones.
As part of the deal, AST SpaceMobile will handle satellite development, manufacturing, and system operations, while Vodafone Idea will manage spectrum usage, terrestrial integration, and market deployment within India.
Enterprise and IoT Applications Also on the Radar
Beyond basic consumer broadband access, the two companies are also exploring joint commercial projects targeting enterprise, IoT, and government use cases. This could be especially relevant for remote agriculture, logistics, maritime connectivity, and emergency communication services.
