Vodafone Idea Launches 5G in Bengaluru with Support from Samsung

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has launched 5G services in Bengaluru, marking its latest step in expanding next-generation connectivity across India. The rollout is part of an ongoing partnership with Samsung Electronics, which has been supplying network infrastructure and software-based solutions to support Vi’s upgrades.

Bengaluru becomes the third city to get Vi’s 5G, following earlier deployments in Chandigarh and Patna. The city’s importance as a tech hub makes it a strategic location for Vi’s 5G ambitions. According to the company, Samsung is powering not just Vi’s 5G network but also modernizing its legacy 2G and 4G systems in key circles like Karnataka, Bihar, and Punjab.

Vi’s 5G Services Arrive in Bengaluru with Support from Samsung

Focus on Virtualization and Efficiency

Samsung’s contribution includes small form-factor radios, Massive MIMO units (32T32R), and virtualized components like the Central Unit (vCU) and Base Station Controller (vBSC). These elements allow Vi to reduce energy use, simplify operations, and integrate older and newer network layers more effectively.

The use of virtualization marks a shift from hardware-based systems to more flexible, software-driven models. This approach can streamline deployments and improve cost efficiency—important factors for telecom providers operating in a competitive and cost-sensitive market.

Maintaining Old, Building New

One notable aspect of the deployment is the implementation of a virtualized Base Station Controller for 2G services. This reflects an effort to maintain older networks while preparing for more modern, scalable infrastructure. Rather than phasing out 2G entirely, Vi seems to be taking a blended approach to support both legacy users and future demands.

Looking Ahead

With spectrum holdings in 17 circles for mid-band 5G and 16 circles for mmWave, Vi appears positioned for further expansion. However, its 5G rollout remains in early stages compared to competitors.
