Vodafone Makes History! Achieving the First Space Video Call Using a Standard Smartphone
Vodafone has achieved a significant milestone by conducting the first-ever video call from space using standard 4G and 5G smartphones. This innovation utilises satellite technology to provide connectivity in areas lacking traditional mobile coverage. Unlike conventional satellite services, this new approach does not require specialised phones or equipment, offering mobile broadband similar to existing networks.
The groundbreaking call was made possible through Vodafone's collaboration with AST SpaceMobile's BlueBird satellites. Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer initiated the call from a remote mountainous area in mid-Wales, which previously had no mobile broadband access. The call was received by Vodafone Group Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle.

Vodafone's Satellite Connectivity
This satellite service operates from low Earth orbit, extending Vodafone's land-based networks. It is unique as it directly connects to multiple 4G and 5G smartphones, ensuring reliable connectivity in remote locations like mountains, open seas, and rural areas where other services are unavailable.
Vodafone became a lead investor in AST SpaceMobile in 2019, playing a pivotal role in pioneering space-based connectivity trials. AST SpaceMobile's five BlueBird satellites now offer peak data transmission speeds of up to 120 Mbps directly to existing smartphones. This network surpasses basic text messaging capabilities by enabling real-time mobile broadband.
Plans for European Markets
Following further testing scheduled for Spring 2025, Vodafone plans to gradually introduce its direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service across European markets later this year and into 2026. This initiative aims to enhance digital inclusion and growth by connecting hard-to-reach areas.

Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant commended the project, stating that "Vodafone's use of satellite and 5G technology to connect hard-to-reach areas aligns with our goal of digital inclusion and growth." This statement highlights the government's support for innovative solutions that bridge connectivity gaps.
Statements from Key Figures
Margherita Della Valle expressed enthusiasm about the achievement: "Vodafone's mission is to connect everyone, no matter where they are. Our advanced European 5G network will now be strengthened with cutting-edge satellite technology." She emphasised that this innovation would help bridge the digital divide and ensure reliable communication during emergencies.
Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, commented on the partnership: "This milestone represents another significant advancement in our partnership with Vodafone... Together, we've achieved numerous world firsts in space-based broadband connectivity." His statement underscores the collaborative efforts between Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile.
This achievement marks a significant step forward for Vodafone as it continues to innovate in telecommunications. By integrating direct-to-mobile satellite technology with its fibre and mobile networks, Vodafone ensures uninterrupted connectivity without additional devices or manual switching. This development comes 40 years after Vodafone made the UK's first-ever mobile phone call on January 1, 1985.
