Apple’s 4th Gen AirPods Could Get ANC Support and a New Design

In a recent update from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is gearing up for a significant revamp of its AirPods lineup with the anticipated launch of the AirPods 4. Gurman suggests that Apple plans to discontinue both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 models after the release of the AirPods 4, streamlining their product offerings.

A Blend of Pro and Standard

The AirPods 4 is set to come in two variants, each with distinct features and price points. Gurman's insights indicate that these new models will strike a balance between the standard AirPods and the premium AirPods Pro. The design will feature a shorter stem and an enhanced fit, though the inclusion of silicone ear tips remains uncertain at this point.

Notable Design Changes

The redesigned charging case for the AirPods 4 is expected to house speakers, enabling Find My alerts. Furthermore, Apple plans to swap the Lightning charging port with a USB Type-C port, aligning with industry trends. The more expensive variant of the AirPods 4 will include the coveted Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) feature, a departure from its exclusivity to the AirPods Pro.

Phasing Out Older Models

The move to phase out the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 comes as a response to the confusion in the current lineup, where minimal differences between models lead consumers to opt for the more affordable option. Looking ahead, Gurman hints at Apple's plan to introduce hearing aid functionality through a software update in the coming year. This aligns with the FDA's approval of over-the-counter hearing aid sales in 2022, positioning Apple's AirPods as an alternative for those seeking hearing assistance. Additionally, the company is exploring the possibility of offering hearing tests to users.

Future Offerings

Beyond the AirPods 4, there are whispers of a more affordable $100 AirPods SE and an upgraded AirPods Max set to debut in 2024. While details about the AirPods SE are scant, the AirPods Max is anticipated to feature new colors and a USB Type-C port, bringing subtle yet notable enhancements to the premium over-ear headphones.
