Apple Watch Saves Life of 82-Year-Old Man After a Car Accident
On January 19, 2024, in Kidderminster, UK, an 82-year-old man's life was dramatically impacted by modern technology in the face of a dangerous accident. The man, Tony Jauncey, credits his Apple Watch, a gift he received for Christmas, with potentially saving his life after he was struck by a car at a roundabout. This incident sheds light on the invaluable role of wearable technology in emergency situations.
According to Jauncey, he was making his way back to his car parked at a local Aldi supermarket when he was hit. "I was crossing the road when I felt a thud," Jauncey recounted to the Shropshire Star, a local newspaper that also released CCTV footage of the harrowing event. The footage revealed a disturbing scene where the driver, neglecting to adhere to the roundabout's rules, collided into Jauncey, causing him significant injuries including a broken collarbone, cracked ribs, and severe bruising.

The roundabout, typically a safety feature in UK roads known for its large, grassy island, was in this case a mere painted circle, which the driver completely disregarded. This disregard led to Jauncey's unfortunate accident, highlighting a rare failure of roundabout safety in the UK, where such traffic features are common and lauded for their safety benefits.
Apple Watch's Critical Role
However, it was Jauncey's Apple Watch that played a crucial role following the accident. The device detected the fall and automatically prompted an option to call emergency services. "The watch detected a fall and asked if I wanted to call the emergency services," Jauncey explained. Unable to move and lying in the road, he chose not to cancel the emergency call, prompting the watch to dial the UK emergency number, 999.
Fortunately, the driver involved in the accident stopped to assist Jauncey, and remarkably, three off-duty nurses in the vicinity also came to his aid. "There were lots of people who came over to help which really put me at ease," Jauncey said, emphasizing the compassionate response from those at the scene.
Wearable Technology as Lifelines
This incident not only underscores the potential hazards at roundabouts, even in regions where they are designed for safety, but also illuminates the life-saving capabilities of wearable technology. Jauncey's experience with his Apple Watch illustrates how such devices can be more than just conveniences or fitness trackers—they can be lifelines in critical moments.
The swift action taken by the watch in calling emergency services underscores a growing reliance on technology for personal safety. As wearable technology continues to evolve, stories like Jauncey's highlight the importance of these devices in today's fast-paced and unpredictable world.
