Apple Watch Series 9 to Get Major Software Upgrade: Report

The upcoming Apple Watch, likely to be called the Series 9, will reportedly get a major overhaul in terms of software. The Apple Watch 9 will be equipped with the next watchOS version, watchOS 10, which has significant changes in the user interface.

In the latest installment of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman adds that the Apple Watch Series 9 will not get major hardware upgrades. The Cupertino-based company will likely follow the same design as the Series 8.

watchOS 10: UI Changes Expected

To make up for the stale design of the purported Series 9, Apple is expected to offer a massive upgrade under the hood. Gurman states, "I believe the new watchOS should be a fairly extensive upgrade - with notable changes to the user interface - unlike iOS 17."

"It's important for watchOS to have a big year given that the Apple Watch hardware updates will be anything but major," he adds. The watchOS redesign will be a significant development for the upcoming Apple Watch, considering that no major features have been introduced in the past few years.

Apple will reportedly unveil watchOS 10 at WWDC, scheduled from June 5 to June 9. The iPhone maker will also likely announce its first mixed-reality headset and the xrOS operating system at the annual developer conference.

Apple Watch Series 9: Rumored Features

The Apple Watch Series 9 may get an updated S9 processor, which offers performance improvements. To recall, last year's Series 8 came equipped with the same S7 processor that powered the Series 7.

The upcoming Apple Watch could also feature support for Bluetooth 5.3, just like the Apple Watch Ultra. The device may also get a minor upgrade in battery life. Apple hasn't confirmed the specs of the Series 9, so we'll have to take these rumors with a pinch of salt.
