Apple WatchOS 11 Announced at WWDC 2024 with Training Mode, Enhanced Safety Features
Apple has announced watchOS 11, the newest version of its smartwatch platform, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. Developers can start experimenting with it today, with a public beta set to arrive next month. The final public release is expected this fall, coinciding with the launch of new Apple Watches.

New Health Features and Training Mode
This year's watchOS 11 introduces several new health features. A standout is the training mode, which analyses personal data to evaluate how workout intensity and duration affect the body over time. Users can also include an "effort rating" for workouts, providing insights into whether to push harder or ease up, including taking rest days.
Another notable update is the ability to pause Activity Rings, which ensures that sickness or injury won't break streaks. Users can now adjust Activity Ring goals based on the day of the week. Additionally, the new Vitals app offers a quick view of important health metrics, and new cycle tracking features for pregnancy display gestational age and highlight abnormal metrics like heart rate.
Live Activities and Enhanced Safety Features
With watchOS 11, Live Activities will now be available on the Apple Watch. New safety features are also included, allowing friends to keep tabs during late-night runs. These features will activate automatically during workouts, similar to those on the Pixel Watch 2.
Smart Stack and Redesigned Photos Watchface
Last year, Apple introduced the smart stack, focusing on widgets. watchOS 11 builds on this, bringing up translation or weather widgets as needed. The Photos watch face has also been revamped, although there aren't many new watchfaces this year.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch. There are rumors of a special "X" version, similar to the iPhone's anniversary edition. However, software updates like watchOS 11 do not always indicate hardware changes. For example, last year's watchOS 10 was a major update focused on widgets, but it had little impact on the hardware of the Series 9.
