Apple's Vision Pro Mixed-Reality Headset Reportedly Set for February Launch

Apple's eagerly awaited mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, is on track for a February launch, according to reports. The tech giant had initially announced the headset's release "early next year," but insider information suggests it might hit the market even earlier, possibly in February.

Production in Full Swing

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reveals that production in China has been running at "full speed" for weeks. The company aims to have retail units ready by the end of January, ensuring a timely arrival on store shelves. With a hefty price tag of $3,499, the Vision Pro is expected to have a limited supply, and Apple seems to be forgoing a formal launch event for this groundbreaking device.

The Complexity of the Launch

This venture marks Apple's first foray into a new product category since the introduction of smartwatches in 2015. The Vision Pro represents a significant move into mixed reality, combining both virtual and augmented reality. While Meta Platforms currently dominate this market, Apple is determined to make a strong impression.

Retail Preparations

Preparing for the complexity of the Vision Pro launch, Apple is enhancing its retail stores to accommodate the headset and its accessories. The headset features customized components, necessitating correct assembly and packaging at the point of sale. Ensuring a proper fit is crucial, as an ill-fitting headset may compromise content display and user comfort.

Employee Training and Software Updates

To ensure a smooth launch, Apple is proactively training its retail employees on effective marketing and sales strategies for the Vision Pro. Training sessions at the company's headquarters will equip staff with knowledge about the headset's features and proper fitting techniques.

Developers are also gearing up for the launch, receiving notifications to "get ready." This could involve creating software tailored for virtual and mixed-reality environments or optimizing existing iPad and iPhone apps for use with the Vision Pro.

VisionOS and iOS 17.2 Integration

The Vision Pro launch includes the introduction of VisionOS, Apple's new software platform for the headset. Gurman hints at a future version of VisionOS expected in 2024, coinciding with regular Mac and iPhone software updates. The recent release of iOS 17.2 enables the iPhone 15 Pro to capture 3D-encoded spatial videos, enhancing the overall mixed-reality experience when played back on the Vision Pro.
