Delayed: Apple Watch Ultra with MicroLED Display Pushed Back to 2026
The development of the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra, which features a highly anticipated microLED screen, is underway at Apple. However, recent reports from market research firm Trendforce (via The Elec, MacRumors) indicate that the release of this eagerly awaited wearable might face a delay until 2026.
The Initial Expectations
Earlier reports, including insights from analyst Ross Young, had suggested that the microLED-equipped Apple Watch Ultra would be launched in the second half of 2025.

The Potential Delay
Contrary to the previous predictions, TrendForce's analysis points to a potential delay in the release of the Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED screen. According to the market research firm, it is unlikely to hit the market before the first quarter of 2026.
The primary reason for this delay appears to be the considerable costs associated with mass production. Apple aims to launch the watch only when it can manufacture microLED displays at a large scale, reducing production expenses in the process.
Apple's Investment in MicroLED Development
In an effort to reduce reliance on external suppliers such as Samsung Display and gain better control over key components' supply, Apple has made significant investments in "in-house microLED development."
MacRumors highlighted that the company has allocated over $1 billion to this endeavor. By developing microLED technology internally, Apple can secure its supply chain and optimize the manufacturing process, leading to greater cost efficiency and control.
Challenges in MicroLED Production
The production of microLED screens presents unique challenges. Apart from the financial costs involved in manufacturing these advanced displays for the Apple Watch Ultra, there is also a requirement for a high level of expertise.
Apple is investing heavily in research and development to overcome these challenges and ensure that the final product meets the company's stringent quality standards.
The Significance of MicroLED for Apple
At present, Apple does not have any device in its product lineup powered by microLED technology. Therefore, the Apple Watch Ultra holds significant importance as the first Apple product expected to incorporate this cutting-edge display technology.
The decision to pursue microLED stems from its inherent advantages over OLED, the technology used in previous iterations of the Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED displays offer improved battery life and a lower risk of burn-in, addressing some of the limitations associated with OLED screens.
