Did a Former Apple Engineer Walk Away With Apple Watch Secrets? A New Lawsuit Says So

Apple’s latest lawsuit against a former engineer isn’t just about smartwatches. It’s a glimpse into how the entire tech industry works—where every company is racing to outdo the other, and the line between fair competition and corporate espionage can get blurry fast.

Did an Ex-Apple Engineer Walk Away With Apple Watch Secrets?

What Sparked the Lawsuit

Apple has accused Chen Shi, a former Sensor System Architect, of stealing trade secrets before jumping ship to Oppo. Court filings claim he downloaded 63 sensitive files, including design specs and roadmaps for future Apple Watch features, then promised Oppo he’d “collect as much information as possible” about health sensors.

Apple says Shi didn’t just resign quietly. Days before leaving, he searched how to wipe a MacBook and whether shared file activity could be tracked. Soon after, he was reportedly leading a sensor team at Oppo, a direct competitor. Apple wants the court to block Oppo from using any of that knowledge while also seeking damages.

Oppo’s Pushback

Oppo has denied the allegations. In its response (via), the company said it respects trade secrets and hasn’t misused Apple’s information. It also pledged to cooperate with the legal process, framing this as a misunderstanding rather than proof of systemic wrongdoing.

Why This Goes Beyond Wearables

On the surface, this might look like a dispute over watch sensors. But the real story is bigger. Every major tech company—whether it’s in smartphones, AI, chips, or cloud services—is trying to leapfrog the competition. That often means hiring away talent with inside knowledge, sometimes walking dangerously close to the edge of what’s legal.

From chip engineers moving between Silicon Valley rivals to AI researchers leaving Big Tech for startups, the story repeats itself: innovation isn’t just about new ideas, it’s also about protecting them. This case is just Apple’s turn to draw a hard line in the sand.
