Google Introduces Wear OS 7 with Android-Style Widgets, Real-Time Live Updates, Gemini Intelligence

Google used the Google I/O 2026 event to unveil Wear OS 7, built on Android 17. The smartwatch update focuses on faster access to information, tighter AI integration and efficiency gains. Google said Wear OS 7 could offer up to 10 percent better battery life than Wear OS 6.

The software brings Widgets in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts, matching popular Android phone styles. These tiles are meant to adapt to changing data, giving glanceable updates. Wear OS 7 also supports Live Updates, so compatible apps can display real-time information directly on the watch face area.

Gemini Intelligence will arrive on selected new smartwatches launching later this year, according to Google. The company described more advanced, agent-like interactions, where Gemini can handle complex requests. A new App Functions API helps developers link their apps with AI assistants such as Gemini for richer smartwatch experiences.

Automation tools are also planned within Wear OS 7. Google confirmed that smartwatches will be able to handle tasks through voice instructions, including practical actions. One example shared by Google is using spoken commands on a watch to complete an order on DoorDash, without reaching for a phone.

Wear OS 7 upgrades media handling with per-app media auto-launch settings and enhanced routing. Audio can move more easily between devices using the Remote Output Switcher. Fitness features gain a unified Wear Workout Tracker, giving a more standard workout logging layout and support for Watch Face Format v5 across compatible designs.

Developers can try Wear OS 7 early through the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, which offers a preview environment. This test build lets app makers explore Widgets, Live Updates, AI links and automation features. Google plans to release Wear OS 7 to users later this year, alongside supported new smartwatch models.
