Apple Vision Pro Debut: What Happened to the Open Sky Environment?
Apple Vision Pro is poised to make its debut in the United States on February 2, stirring up anticipation nearly eight months since its first appearance at WWDC 2023. This next-gen device is expected to transport users into an unparalleled immersive experience, but it seems to be launching with one feature short of the original promise. A vigilant ex-Twitter user, now on platform X, noticed that Apple had made some subtle yet telling changes to its promotional content, sparking speculations about the forthcoming features of the Vision Pro.
The change was first spotted by X user M1 (@M1Astra), who pointed out alterations to Apple's introductory YouTube video, initially posted seven months ago. The original video, lasting 9 minutes and 11 seconds, has been trimmed to a neat 9 minutes. A critical 11 seconds showcasing the Open Sky Environment feature, which was claimed to "magically replace" the user's ceiling with a virtual "clear, open sky," has been excised.

What the Video Revealed
The alteration is not just a snip in the timeline. Dragging the seek bar to the 5:13 mark in the video, viewers can still see the thumbnail preview of the previous version, where a woman gazes upwards, seeing a simulated sky on her Vision Pro headset, replacing her actual ceiling. In contrast, the edited version transitions to a scene where a person is seen donning the Vision Pro on an airplane, omitting any reference to the Open Sky feature.
Website Adjustments Point to Feature Change
Apple's official website has also undergone revisions. The phrase that once teased the ability to "[...] or magically replace your ceiling with a clear, open sky" has been swapped for a more grounded " [...] or turn your room into a personal movie theatre with Cinema Environment." This wording change further fuels the speculation that the Open Sky Environment feature may not be ready for the limelight.
Speculating on the Feature's Fate
The reason behind the vanishing feature is unclear. It is speculated that the sheer diversity of ceilings and roofs might pose a significant challenge to uniformly optimize this ambitious feature. Apple has remained silent on whether the Open Sky Environment has been permanently removed from visionOS 1.0 or if it's something that might be introduced in a future update.
