Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Mixed-Reality Chipset
In a move that sets the stage for heightened competition in the extended reality (XR) market, Qualcomm has revealed its latest chip platform, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. This advanced XR chip succeeds the XR2 Gen 2, the powerhouse behind Meta's Quest 3 mixed-reality headset.
Enhanced Visuals and Performance
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 boasts a remarkable upgrade in spatial computing, delivering an impressive 4.3K resolution per eye at a smooth 90 frames per second. This represents a significant enhancement over its predecessor's 3K resolution. Users can now anticipate a more immersive and detailed XR experience.

Power-packed Specifications
Qualcomm has not only elevated visual quality but also intensified raw power. The new chip features a GPU that operates 15% faster and a CPU with a 20% speed boost compared to its forerunner. Notably, the GPU achieves a 2.5x speed improvement while consuming 50% less power, promising efficient performance.
Expanded Camera Support and On-Device AI
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 ups the ante by expanding camera support from 10 to 12, enabling full-color video passthrough with an impressively low latency of under 12ms. On the AI front, there's an up to 8x improvement in on-device AI performance, elevating the XR experience to new heights.
Focused Features
Among its features, the chip supports the latest Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi 7, and incorporates foveated rendering, enhancing power efficiency by blurring areas outside the user's focus.
Samsung's XR Headset: A Potential Challenger to Apple Vision Pro
While Samsung had initially teased a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm on an Extended Reality headset, recent reports suggest a delay in its release. Speculations hint at Samsung refining the design and hardware inspired by the Apple Vision Pro.
A Visual Showdown
Compared to the Vision Pro's 4K resolution per eye, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 steals the spotlight with a 4.3K resolution per eye. If Samsung opts for Qualcomm's latest offering, it could potentially outshine Apple in visual clarity.
