Google Rolls Out Android 16 Developer Preview 1: What’s New?
Google has wasted no time in advancing its Android operating system. Just a month after Android 15's rollout, the tech giant has released the first Developer Preview of Android 16. Available for Pixel 6 and newer devices, this preview introduces several new features designed to enhance functionality, privacy, and user experience.
The early release aligns with Google's shift to more frequent updates, promising two Android updates in 2025: a major release in Q2 and a minor follow-up in Q4. Here's a look at what the Android 16 Developer Preview offers and its release timeline.

Key Features of Android 16 Developer Preview
Embedded Photo Picker
Android 16 introduces an updated photo picker designed to enhance privacy and usability. This feature allows users to select specific photos and videos to share with apps without granting access to their entire media library. Whether files are stored locally or in the cloud, the picker now integrates more seamlessly into apps, appearing as part of the app interface rather than a standalone overlay.
Health Records Integration
Google's Health Connect app gets a significant boost with Android 16, introducing a feature for storing and sharing health records. Users can grant third-party apps access to vaccination records, lab results, and other medical data securely. Built on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), this feature ensures that health data is interoperable and accessible, with user consent, in emergencies or for routine monitoring.
Notification Cooldown
Addressing a common annoyance, Android 16's Notification Cooldown feature reduces the frequency of alerts when multiple notifications are received within a short period. While priority conversations, alarms, and calls remain unaffected, this change ensures a less intrusive notification experience.
Audio Sharing
Android 16 enables multiple Bluetooth headphones to connect simultaneously, allowing shared media playback. This feature relies on Bluetooth LE Audio, meaning it will require compatible devices to function.
Privacy Sandbox Enhancements
The latest version of Privacy Sandbox debuts with Android 16, improving data encryption and security. This framework separates certain types of sensitive data into isolated environments, offering stronger protection against malware and hacking attempts.
Release Timeline
The Android 16 Developer Preview will run through December 2024, during which developers can test their apps using the latest APIs and prepare for the official release.
- Beta Launch: Expected in May 2025, enabling users to try Android 16 on Pixel and select devices.
- Stable Version: Scheduled for Q4 2025, alongside the anticipated minor Android update later in the year.
Early Access and Compatibility
The Developer Preview is currently available for Pixel 6 and newer models, as well as through the Android Emulator. This phase targets app developers, giving them early access to new features and tools to ensure their apps are optimized for the update.
