Windows 11’s New Hidden Feature Aims to Make Sharing Easier Than Ever – Here’s How to Unlock It

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Insider Beta Build (22635.4445) introduces a hidden universal Share button, marking the company's ongoing efforts to unify the user experience and simplify file-sharing across devices. The feature was first identified by Windows enthusiast @phantomofearth on X (formerly Twitter), who uncovered the Share button in various parts of the interface, including the Start menu and Taskbar.

However, the feature is disabled by default and must be manually activated using a third-party tool.

Hidden Share Button Enhances Windows 11 Sharing Options

Windows 11's new Share button is designed to make file-sharing between devices and contacts more seamless. In this preview build, users can right-click on a file in the Start menu to share it directly or access the option from the Taskbar to send files from within an app. While the button is integrated across the Windows 11 interface, it remains hidden for now, requiring the use of ViveTool: a program that can unlock experimental features within Windows builds.

For those eager to try the feature, enabling the Share button involves entering a few commands in ViveTool:

vivetool /enable /id:46493758
vivetool /enable /id:45738940

This addition could make it easier for users to send files without opening separate sharing options, building on earlier updates that enabled direct file-sharing from File Explorer to Android devices. This streamlined approach could be a helpful tool for users who frequently transfer files across devices and accounts.

Not Just Sharing: Microsoft Testing Other Features in Insider Preview

Alongside the Share button, Microsoft has been testing various other features through its Windows Insider program, including the introduction of a new AI-driven tool in the Notepad app. The "Rewrite" feature allows users to automatically generate alternative text, letting them adjust content to be longer or shorter or to adopt a particular tone. This update, available in Notepad version 11.2410.15.0, is currently being tested in the Dev and Canary channels, targeting users who often work with text and may need quick, AI-powered assistance.

Looking Ahead

The universal Share button is still in a preview phase, and it's uncertain if or when it will be widely available. As Microsoft continues to experiment with features like these, its Windows Insider program provides valuable insights into what users find useful-or unnecessary-in the evolving Windows 11 environment.
