Top Must-Have Safety Apps For Women In India
The safety of women in India has always been a debatable topic. India is a progressing nation and many women have achieved remarkable milestones. But, their safety is still a questionable matter. At the same time, technology has provided some relief with safety apps for women.
There are numerous safety apps, where some are developed especially for women, which aims to send aid if the need arises. Apart from these dedicated safety apps, tracking features on ride-hailing apps like Uber and Ola also assist in women's safety. Here are some apps for the safety of women:
Himmat
Himmat is a safety app launched by the Delhi Police and is recommended for women in Delhi. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the crime against women rose from 41.7% to 53.9% between 2011 to 2015 in India with Delhi topping the list. Once the Himmat app is installed, the user gets an OTP, which completes the configuration of the app.
In troubling situations, one simply needs to send an SOS alert from the Himmat app. Automatically, the location and the audio-video information of the sender is traced by the Delhi Police control room. The nearest police station is informed immediately to send help in time.
My Safetipin
My Safetipin app is a map-based app for safe navigation. The safety of a location the user wishes to go is indicated on the app. If the location is pointed with a red pin on the map, it means it's unsafe. Green pins indicate safe and amber pins are for areas moderately safe. My Safetipin app also provides information about the frequency of public transport.
As a map-based app, My Safetipin app also tells the user about where the police station is, the nearest ATM, clinic, pharmacy, and more. The app also shares the real-time location via GPS tracking to the user's contacts. Users can also ‘pin' the areas to indicate whether it is safe or not. The app is available in Hindi and English languages.
Smart 24X7
The Smart 24X7 app has a three-step procedure in case of emergencies. Firstly, a woman in distress needs to press the PANIC button in the app, which then offers different types of services required. On selecting the type of distress and the required help, the PANIC button sends the message to the receiver.
The Smart 24X7 app has a Fake Call feature to handle uncertain situations smartly. The app keeps a record of images, audio, and other data of the panic situation, which is then sent to the police. The Smart 24X7 app has a call center that runs 24X7. Users will also find features like travel updates with contacts, maid/servant registration with the police, and more. The app is also a senior citizen-friendly to send SOS in times of emergencies.
Hawk Eye
The Hyderabad Police developed the Hawk Eye app, which features several services in case of emergencies. Particularly for women, there's a feature called Women Travel Made Safe. The feature directs towards the safety of working women, especially those who travel at odd hours of the day. Before a woman boards an auto or a bus or any mode of transport to reach home, she needs to click a picture of the vehicle, notes the vehicle number, and place of boarding and destination. The information is sent to the police, who, during an SOS situation sends it to the Inspector, ACP, DCP, and Mobile Patrolling vans around the location of the user.
Tell Tail
Another safety app developed in Delhi by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS). The app is mainly for women and other citizens when in transit, where they can share their location with their contacts via the GPS installed in vehicles like buses, autos, and other public transports. The location can also be shared with the GPS on the user's smartphone.
Tell Tail also features the SOS message to send alerts. An SOS alert can be sent either by clicking the panic button or the power button three times. It can also be sent by shaking the smartphone three times with a little jerk. Even if the receiver need not have the Tell Tail app, the alert reaches them through an SMS or an alarm ring. The location of the sender will also be sent.
There are numerous other apps like bSafe, Shake2Safety, and more which send SOS alerts in time of need. All the above-mentioned apps are available on both Android and iOS.
