|

Apple iPhone and the Apple Watch are popular gadgets globally. It's evident that Apple, like other tech giants, collects data from users. Back in September, Apple had announced a research app for consumers to participate in their Apple devices. The Apple Research app has gone live today for both iPhone and Watch users.

The Apple Research app allows users to participate in three health-based studies, which are: women's health study, a hearing-based study, and a heart-movement study. Apple has previously used user data for research, teaming up with health researchers and organizations. However, the new app is a dedicated platform where users can opt-in. Apple says the app will make it easier for people to join multiple studies at once.

Apple says that "participants can contribute to potentially groundbreaking medical discoveries with iPhone and Apple Watch, and help create the next generation of innovative health products." The Apple Research app is available for iPhone 6s and beyond with iOS 13.2 and higher versions. The Research app is initially being tried out in the US; there is still no update about a global rollout.

The Apple Research app is tying up with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences for the first study on women's health. The American Heart Association and Brigham and Women's Hospital will research the heart and movement study. Lastly, the University of Michigan and the World Health Organization are dedicated to the hearing study.

Naturally, users signing into the Apple Research app want to know what will happen with their data. Apple says the data collected aims to understand and improve public health and will contribute to the research community. Additionally, it can be understood that Apple will use the data to improve its products as well.

Apple assures the utmost privacy to users signing up, where data-sharing will be user-controlled. Apple says the data collected will be encrypted and will not be sold to other third-parties. Moreover, health researchers and organizations need to inform users on how their data will support the research. Apple gives the users full authority to withdraw from the study anytime.
