Elon Musk Announces Twitter’s Plan to Restrict the Number of Tweets Users Can Read

In a surprising move, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, recently announced that the popular social media platform will be implementing new restrictions on the number of tweets users can view per day.

The announcement sparked a wave of reactions, with thousands of individuals reporting issues with the service, highlighting the significant impact this change has had on Twitter's vast user base.

Twitter to Limit the Number of Tweets Users Can Read

Elon Musk's Announcement and Its Impact

Elon Musk went on Twitter to announce the upcoming restrictions on viewing tweets. The purpose, as stated by Musk, is to discourage the widespread practice of data scraping and system manipulation. Data scraping is when information is automatically extracted from websites, usually done with harmful intentions or to gain an unfair advantage.

According to his tweet, the following limits will be enforced:

  • Verified accounts: Users can view up to 10,000 posts per day.
  • Unverified accounts: Limited to 1,000 posts per day.
  • New unverified accounts: Restricted to 500 posts per day.

These limitations were revised from the initial announcement where verified accounts were restricted to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts were limited to 600 posts per day, and new unverified accounts were restricted to 300 posts per day.

Users Are Not Happy

Following the announcement, the impact of the tweet viewing restrictions became evident as reports of issues with the service surged. Downdetector, a website that monitors online outages, recorded over 7,500 individuals reporting problems with Twitter. This sudden influx of issues caused the hashtag #TwitterDown to trend in certain regions, highlighting the significance of the situation.

This particular decision by Musk is among the many bold yet controversial moves he has made. Recently, Twitter implemented a paywall for its API, which resulted in widespread public criticism. The outcry was so intense that the company had to modify its initial decision.
