Twitter Opens API for Public Announcement Accounts for Free
In one of many controversial moves since Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, the app introduced a price tier of its API access last month, forcing many organizations and developers who had previously been able to access Twitter connectivity for free to pay upwards of $40k per month for similar access.
Now, Twitter has backed down a little, declaring on Tuesday that its API will be free to use for accounts making public announcements like weather alerts, transportation updates, and emergency warnings.

According to the company, verified government or publicly owned services that post about public utility alerts will be eligible for free API usage.
Twitter Introduced Updated Pricing Tiers for Its API Last Month
The social media platform recently announced new API pricing tiers. Users on the free API tier are limited to sending 1,500 tweets per month, while those on the $100 basic tier can send up to 3,500.
This change drew a number of complaints from important Twitter accounts such as the National Weather Services (NWS), which tweets about weather awareness, as well as other organizations.
Last month, the NWS tweeted that its ability to post automated tweets had been limited due to the new API pricing tiers. Similarly, New York's Metro Transit Service (MTS) also announced that it would end its public alert system on Twitter, which was operated through various accounts.
The move seemed backward and counterintuitive for Twitter, as it limited the platform's utility, but the social media giant has now recognized this and reversed its decision to charge these providers.
Apart from the impact on public services, the change in API pricing has also had a massive effect on several tools used by businesses. In April, Microsoft removed the option for Twitter from its social media sharing tool for advertisers, citing the increased API pricing as the reason for the move.
Around the same time, Flipboard, a popular news aggregation platform, announced that its Twitter integration had stopped working due to the change in API pricing.
These developments underscore the importance of Twitter's API for businesses and highlight the significant impact that changes in pricing and access can have on the broader social media ecosystem.
