Gems Arrive on Gemini Mobile App with Fresh Interface Overhaul

Google's Gemini app is expanding its capabilities with the introduction of AI agents, dubbed "Gems," and a refreshed user interface. The new features, which first appeared on the web version of Gemini, are now available on both iOS and Android platforms, offering users more ways to interact with Google's generative AI.

Gems: Custom AI Agents for Gemini

The standout addition to the Gemini app is the rollout of Gems, custom AI agents tailored for specific tasks. Initially launched on the web version of Gemini in August, Gems are now accessible via the mobile app.

These specialized chatbots allow users to create and utilize AI tools designed for particular functions, such as career advice or coding assistance.

The Gems feature integrates into the Gemini app through a new section labeled "Chat & Gems," replacing the previous "Recent" section. Users can access Gems by clicking on their profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen, where a new option, "Gem Manager," is available. This manager is divided into three tabs: "All," "Your Gems," and "By Google."

• All: Shows all available Gems.
• Your Gems: Displays custom AI agents created by the user.
• By Google: Features default Gems created by Google, including a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career guide, writing editor, and coding partner.

Gems are designed to provide faster and more accurate responses compared to the full-fledged Gemini chatbot, leveraging a more focused dataset relevant to their specific purpose. Note that this feature is currently available only to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

Gemini App Redesign

In addition to the new AI agents, Google is implementing a redesign of the Gemini app's home page. The update simplifies the interface by replacing the previous greeting message "How can I help you today?" with a more minimalist "How can I help you?" The new design aims to provide a cleaner, less overwhelming experience.

The redesigned home page features a streamlined interface where suggested prompts and the option for new chats are accessed via a chat icon at the top-left corner of the screen. This change reflects a broader trend towards more minimalistic and user-friendly interfaces in digital products.

Updates and Future Plans

The update to the Gemini app follows recent enhancements across Google's services, including the integration of AI tools into Google Forms and advanced search capabilities within Gmail.

While the new home page design is not yet universally available, users can force-stop the app to potentially access the latest updates.
