Google Podcasts Is Shutting Down Today in the US: Users Asked to Switch to YouTube Music
On April 2nd, 2024, the Google Podcasts app will officially cease operation in the United States. Users are receiving in-app notifications and emails urging them to transfer their podcast subscriptions to YouTube Music if they wish to continue listening to their favorite shows. While the app can still be used for a limited period to facilitate migration, accessing and playing podcasts directly through Google Podcasts will no longer be possible after the shutdown date.
End of an Era for a Popular Podcast Platform Launched over five years ago, the Google Podcasts app amassed over 500 million downloads worldwide, establishing itself as a go-to platform for podcast discovery and listening. Users appreciated its user-friendly interface, efficient search functionalities, and the ability to subscribe to podcasts through RSS feeds. However, in September 2023, Google announced its strategic decision to phase out the app by early 2024 and consolidate its audio offerings under the YouTube umbrella.

YouTube Music Expands into Podcasts This move parallels Google's previous transition from Google Play Music to YouTube Music in 2020. Initially, YouTube Music lacked the functionalities needed to fully compete as a podcast platform, necessitating the continued operation of Google Podcasts. However, by the end of 2023, YouTube Music had significantly expanded its capabilities, culminating in the introduction of RSS feed support in February, paving the way for a more comprehensive podcast experience.
Strategic Consolidation in the Podcasting Landscape The decision to close down Google Podcasts is likely driven by a strategic vision to streamline Google's audio offerings and capitalize on the growing popularity of video podcasts. This trend has been underscored by Spotify's recent partnership with Universal Music Group to launch video podcasts in the US, following a successful international rollout. By integrating podcasting into YouTube, Google seeks to strengthen its position within the evolving audio landscape.
Migration Window and Future of Google Podcasts Globally Bleeping Computer first reported the specific shutdown date for Google Podcasts in the US, subsequently confirmed by Google's support page. Although users have until July 2024 to export their subscriptions if they miss the in-app prompts, accessing the service itself will no longer be possible after April 2nd. While Google hasn't officially commented on the situation, the company has acknowledged the April 2nd shutdown in the US without specifying a global discontinuation date. However, based on previous statements, a worldwide closure of the Google Podcasts app sometime in 2024 appears likely.
