WhatsApp beta 2.18.18 gets notification channels and voice to video call switch
WhatsApp gets the notification channels feature as seen on Android 8.0 Oreo that lets you customize each type of notifications of the app.
Android 8.0 Oreo brings a new feature called notifications channels that lets you customize individual notifications of the same app on your phone. Now WhatsApp has rolled out the Notification Channel feature on Android 8.0 Oreo and this feature was discovered in the version 2.18.18 of the WhatsApp beta app. This feature lets you customize the individual notifications of WhatsApp as per your preference.
According to Android Police, in the new WhatsApp beta version 2.18.18, WhatsApp supports 10 notification channels such as group notifications, chat history backup, message notifications, critical app alerts, media playback, failure notifications, other notifications, Uncategorized, silent notifications and sending media.
If you have already opted to be a beta tester of WhatsApp, then you can easily get these features along with the 2.18.18 version of the app or get the app updated from the Google Play Store. If not, you can choose to download the latest version of the app from APK Mirror and sideload the same manually on your device.
Prioritize notifications
With the ability to prioritize the notifications based on the type, you can give high priority to the individual messages and a low priority to the group messages. You can also disable the notifications related to chat backup messages. These are just a few things that you do but there is a lot more that the notification channels bring to WhatsApp.
Disable notifications
These 10 notification channel settings can be controlled individually and you can set priorities to the alerts that you receive from the app. You can either disable the notifications or control individual notifications by holding down the notifications setting of the app and customizing each one. You can also change the priority by hitting All Categories that will take you to the settings from where you can choose the one you want to change.
Switch from voice to video call
Apart from notification channels, the beta version 2.18.18 has brought in another feature that we have been seeing for the past few days. It is the ability to switch from voice calls to video calls without disconnecting the ongoing call. The button at the bottom in the voice call interface of WhatsApp will let you send a request for video call to the recipient and the person on the other end can either accept or reject the request for the incoming video call.
