WhatsApp Brings Channels For Broadcast Messages: Everything You Need to Know
Earlier, there were reports of WhatsApp working on the development of a feature called "Channels." These reports have now become a reality, as Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has started rolling out the feature in certain markets.
Mark Zuckerberg's Announcement
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced WhatsApp Channels as a private way for users to follow people and organizations that matter to them. He emphasized the focus on privacy and mentioned that Channels would start in Singapore and Colombia, with plans to expand availability to more countries later in the year. As a channel admin, the phone number remains hidden from followers, ensuring privacy for both admins and followers. Additionally, messages sent on Channels are automatically deleted after 30 days, and WhatsApp does not retain any records of them.

The Purpose of Channels on WhatsApp
WhatsApp Channels aim to provide a platform for entities such as NGOs, medical research institutions, and fact-checking bodies to communicate with their audience. Unlike Instagram, where channel announcements are sent via direct messages, WhatsApp has introduced a separate tab called "Updates" to display these channel messages.
Features of WhatsApp Channels

One-way Conversations
The conversations on WhatsApp Channels are one-way, meaning users can only receive messages from the channel admins. It's important to note that users won't be able to reply to these messages directly.
Content Types Supported
Admins can send various types of content through WhatsApp Channels, including text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. This allows for a rich and engaging experience for the channel followers.
Joining Channels and Discoverability
Users can join channels by clicking on an invite link provided by the channel admin. Additionally, WhatsApp is working on a directory feature to help users find channels related to their interests, such as hobbies, sports teams, and local officials. The company also plans to introduce tools that allow admins to make their channels undiscoverable, offering more privacy options.
Admin Tools and Privacy Measures
WhatsApp Channels provide admin tools for channel management. Admins have control over the content they share and can schedule messages to be sent at specific times. Privacy is a key focus, as WhatsApp ensures that the phone numbers of channel admins and followers are not visible. Following a channel does not reveal the identity of the admin or other followers.
Initial Rollout and Partnerships
Meta is initially launching Channels in select markets, starting with Colombia and Singapore. Organizations like the Singapore Heart Foundation and fact-checker Colombia Check are among the early adopters of this feature. Moreover, Meta has partnered with prominent international organizations such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and renowned sports teams like FC Barcelona and Manchester City.
