WWDC 2023: iPadOS 17 Updated With New Health App, Interactive Widgets, and Customizable Lock Screen

At the 2023 edition of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled the next edition of its tablet operating system, the iPadOS 17. The tech giant continues to improve user experience by blurring the lines between its iPad and iPhone ecosystems.

Let's find out what improvements the iPhone maker has brought to the tablet operating system.

WWDC 2023: Apple Launches iPadOS 17 With New Features

With iPadOS 17, the Lock Screen receives a significant makeover. Borrowing from the successful features introduced with iOS 16, the new Lock Screen allows iPad users to customize their wallpaper, play around with different widgets, and tweak font styles.

It also now supports Live Activities, offering users real-time updates directly on their lock screen, which could include live updates from a sports match, food delivery tracking, or travel plans.

iPadOS 17 Launch: Interactive Widgets

An exciting feature that will significantly enhance user interaction is the introduction of interactive widgets. This enhancement allows users to take actions directly through the widget without the need to open the respective app.

These new widgets can perform tasks such as playing music, managing reminders, and controlling smart home features.

iPadOS 17 Launch: New Apple Health App

Apple has also given iPad users the Health app, originally debuted on iPhones in 2014. This comprehensive app syncs data from Apple Watch and iPhone but can also be used standalone, providing users with insights into their health and wellness.

The larger display of the iPad has been leveraged for a more immersive view of health data. The app also includes mental health tracking tools, an addition in line with Apple's focus on holistic health.

Improved Multitasking with Stage Manager

The Stage Manager feature, which enables multitasking by allowing multiple app windows to be open at once, also receives a significant upgrade in iPadOS 17. It offers more flexibility in window resizing and positioning, further enhancing productivity on the iPad.

In a boon for those who frequently work with documents, the Notes app will now support PDFs. Leveraging machine learning, this feature allows automatic field identification in a PDF for more comfortable annotation using the Apple Pencil.

Apple has also integrated a live collaboration feature within Notes, letting multiple users work simultaneously on the same PDF, reflecting changes in real time.

The Journal app, a new addition to the Apple ecosystem, will also be part of the iPadOS 17. It will sit alongside improvements to existing apps like Messages and Find My, all courtesy of the cross-over features from iOS 17.

How to Download iPadOS 17

The updated iPadOS 17 is available for download to those enrolled in Apple's Developer Beta program today. A public beta version will be available in July, with a full rollout planned for the general public in the fall.

In addition to iPadOS 17, Apple also showcased its long-awaited AR/VR headset, the Vision Pro, iOS 17, and a new 15-inch MacBook Air, promising an exciting tech-filled year ahead for Apple enthusiasts.
