YouTube Music Now Supports Podcasts Through RSS Feeds

In response to the impending shutdown of Google Podcasts in 2024, YouTube Music (YTM) is making significant strides to become a formidable player in the podcasting arena.

One key development is the introduction of the ability to add podcasts via RSS feeds, eliminating the need for podcasters to upload video versions of their episodes.

Streamlining the Process with RSS Feeds

Previously, podcasters on YTM were required to upload video content, a process that demanded additional effort and potentially hindered many creators. The latest update aims to simplify this procedure, allowing users to add podcasts seamlessly via RSS feeds. This functionality is currently being rolled out on Android and web platforms.

To utilize this feature, users can navigate to the Library tab and select the Podcasts filter. Here, they will find the new "Add podcast" option in the bottom-right corner. Users can either explore popular podcasts on YouTube or add shows using an RSS feed by providing a private or public URL. The added podcasts will then appear alongside other content in the user's library, distinguished by an RSS icon for easy identification.

Smooth Transition and International Availability

Despite the feature not being widely available on all accounts as of now, YTM is making strides to ensure a smooth transition from Google Podcasts. A forthcoming "simple migration tool" will facilitate the transfer of existing Google Podcasts subscriptions to YTM, easing the process for dedicated podcast listeners.

Meanwhile, the broader podcasting feature in YouTube Music is expected to gain broader international availability, further expanding the platform's reach.

YTM's Ongoing Enhancements

This move by YTM is part of a broader strategy to enhance the platform's podcasting capabilities. Beyond the transition from video uploads to RSS feeds, YouTube Music is testing various user-friendly features. These include custom playlist art creation using generative AI, Apple HomePod support, and a redesigned overflow menu, positioning YTM as a comprehensive platform for both music and podcast enthusiasts.
