Why Both Apple and Qualcomm Just Bet Your Next Phone on Agentic AI

Two days after Apple showed off its A20 Pro chip and the AI brain inside the iPhone 18 Pro, Qualcomm put out a teaser for its next chip, the one that will power most of 2027's Android flagships, and both companies used the same phrase to describe the future — Agentic AI. You are going to hear it at every phone launch from here on, so it is worth understanding what it actually means before the marketing wears the word out.

Here is the short version. Today's phone AI answers you, while tomorrow's phone AI is meant to act for you. That shift, from answering to doing, is the whole idea, and it is the thing Apple and Qualcomm are now racing to build into the silicon. It's the same bell that Jay Kim, Head of Customer Experience at Samsung Mobile, rung during a roundtable in London at the Galaxy Fold8 launch in July, 2026.

First, what AI on your phone does today

Right now, the AI on your phone is basically a very clever question-and-answer machine. You ask Siri or ChatGPT something, it gives you an answer, and that is where it stops and expects you to take action on it. It can tell you the best time to fly to Goa. It cannot then open the airline app, compare fares, and hold a booking for you.

That is what people in the industry call a chatbot or an assistant — useful, but passive. It waits for you to ask, responds, and goes quiet again.

So what makes AI agentic

An agentic AI does not stop at the answer. Give it a goal instead of a single question, and it works out the steps on its own, uses the apps and tools on your phone to carry them out, and only comes back to you when the job is done or when it needs a decision.

Think of the difference like this. A regular assistant is someone who answers your question when you ask. An agent is someone you hand a task to and trust to figure out the rest. Instead of "what flights are there to Goa," you say "get me to Goa next weekend under fifteen thousand rupees," and the agent checks the dates, compares the fares across apps, remembers you prefer a morning flight, and either books it or presents you the final choice to approve.

The technical definition researchers use lines up neatly with that. An agentic system takes a goal rather than a task, picks and uses tools on its own, keeps track of where it is across several steps, and produces a finished result without needing you to hold its hand at every stage. In plain terms, it plans, it acts, and it adapts.

Why the chip suddenly matters

Here is the part that connects it to the two launches. Running an agent is far harder work than answering a single question, because the AI has to keep a lot in its head at once, the goal, the steps done so far, the tools available, the context of who you are and what you like. Doing all of that on the phone itself, without shipping your data off to a distant server, needs serious hardware.

That is exactly what Apple and Qualcomm just built. Apple's A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro doubled its Neural Engine, the part of the chip dedicated to AI, and added a big jump in memory speed. Qualcomm, previewing its next Snapdragon ahead of a September 22 launch, is pitching a new AI engine designed specifically for agents that, in its words, juggle longer context, more tools and several tasks at once. Different companies, identical target. Both are shaping their most important chip of the year around running agents on the device.

Why on-device?

You might wonder why this has to happen on the phone at all, when the cloud has far more computing power. Two reasons, and both matter more in India than almost anywhere.

The first is privacy. An agent that runs on your phone can rummage through your messages, calendar and photos to get a task done without any of that leaving the device. An agent that runs in the cloud has to send your personal life to someone else's computer first. On-device keeps it private.

The second is that it works when the network does not. An agent that lives on the chip keeps functioning on a patchy signal, in a lift, on a train between stations, in the many places where Indian mobile data still drops. It does not wait for four bars to think.

Should you care yet

Honestly, not urgently, and it is worth being straight about that. The chips are ready before the software is. The hardware in the iPhone 18 Pro and the coming Snapdragon phones is built for agents, but the genuinely useful, do-my-tasks agents are still arriving in pieces, and the first versions will be narrower than the demos suggest. We have seen the industry over-promise on phone AI before.

What has actually changed is the direction. When the two biggest names in mobile silicon quietly redesign their flagship chips around the same idea in the same week, that is the industry telling you where phones are going. Not a smarter thing to talk to, but a capable thing to delegate to. Whether it delivers is next year's story, but what this week tells us is that both companies have bet the chip on it.
