With the Surface tablet, Microsoft has an answer for the next-generation Wii U console, and it’s called “SmartGlass.” The technology, which Microsoft unveiled at the E3 videogame conference promised to inlcude it in the new Windows 8 operating system device. 

SmartGlass will basically allow the tablet to act like a game controller and stream media to a big screen controlled by the Xbox. It will also augment videogames with addition information such as team formations in a sports game. 

Microsoft describes SmartGlass as a free application that works with Windows phones, Windows 8 and other portable devices. 

Xbox SmartGlass is an attempt made to connect tablets and smartphones to the Xbox 360 interface. Consumers will be able to start playing media, such as music, sports, games, or shows, on their tablet or smartphone, and then move it to any HDTV that the Xbox 360 is hooked up to. 

Windows RT OS

With the integration of the latest Windows 8 OS, Microsoft will be putting a lot of effort into adding interesting apps, services, and functionality to their new Windows RT tablet. The free music streaming part of Xbox Music is only going to be available on Windows 8 and Windows RT, also there will be the cloud sync capability for users to play music from your other devices. Users will also be offered to experience some great apps for Bing related content including custom news feeds, sports, Bing search, travel information, finance, etc. 

All these features will definitely offer a great user experience, as it is a Microsoft device running on the company's own OS. 

Display

One reason to buy Microsoft Surface is that its widescreen HD display feature provide a crystal-clear picture quality and is event better that the Apple New iPad Retina Display. 

The Surface with Windows RT boasts a 10.6-inch along with 768 x 366 pixel resolution, while the third-generation iPad has a 9.7-inch screen with 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. The pixel density per inch on the iPad is 264 PPI compared to 148 PPI on the Surface RT.

However, during a discussion on Reddit earlier this week, Steven Bathiche, director of research for Microsoft's Applied Sciences group, claimed “Microsoft has the best pixel rendering technology in the industry” and “doing a side by side with the new iPad in a consistently lit room, we have had many people see more detail on Surface RT than on the iPad with more resolution.” 

Naturally, Bathiche is going to tout his own company's product as superior to other tablets. Latest reports also have argued that the tablet screen quality is not better than iPad 3, however, it is definitely ground-breaking when compared to other brands in the market.

Processor

Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 for ARM processors that power all iOS, Android, and other mobile devices on the market. That means the device should have pretty good real-world battery life since ARM chips are popular among mobile device makers because of their power efficiency. ARM has already gained much traction in large part because of its better battery management. Malware designed to run on current Windows computers generally won't work on ARM's chips.
