AMD Ryzen Z1 Series Chips for ROG Ally and Other Handheld Gaming Consoles Announced

AMD has announced the Ryzen Z1 series of processors for next-gen handheld gaming PCs. The Z1 lineup comprises the Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme, and are based on the 4nm Ryzen Zen 4 architecture.

The Asus ROG Ally console will be the first device to ship with the upcoming Ryzen Z1 chipset. The American semiconductor company states that the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme will be "temporarily exclusive" to Asus devices.

The vanilla AMD Ryzen Z1 features six Zen 4 CPU cores with twelve threads and the GPU has four RDNA 3 cores. The chipset comes with a 22MB cache and is said to offer 2.8 teraflops of graphics performance.

Meanwhile, the higher-end Ryzen Z1 Extreme is equipped with eight Zen 4 CPU cores with 16 threads. It also features 12 RDNA 3 graphics cores along with a 24MB cache. AMD claims that the processor can deliver up to 8.6 teraflops of graphic performance.

Additionally, the Ryzen Z1 series supports USB4, LPDDR5, and LPDDR5X memory for better performance and low latency. The chipsets also support AMD RadeonSuper Resolution, Radeon Image Sharpening, Radeon Chill, and AMD Link.

AMD claims that the Z1 series processors deliver "incredible battery life" for a "truly portable, high-performance gaming experience." The brand promises higher frame rates, responsiveness, and longer battery life, thanks to its RDNA 3 architecture-based inbuilt graphics.

The Ryzen Z1 series is compatible with Windows 11 and other operating systems, providing access to a variety of PC games via the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Devices equipped with the Z1 chipset will also be able to get native access to "popular social and productivity software," AMD adds.

The upcoming Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld console will be the first device to feature the new Ryzen Z1 processor. Popular tech YouTuber Linus Sebastian recently previewed the ROG Ally, stating that it will deliver twice the performance of the Steam Deck at 35W.

The device will feature a 7-inch display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and 500 nits of peak brightness. It is capable of displaying 4K videos with the eGPU. It also features a 3.5 mm audio jack and a microSD slot.

The ROG Ally will arrive as Asus' first handheld gaming device and it will be unveiled on May 11 at 7:30pm IST. We can expect the brand to share pricing details at the upcoming announcement.
