Apple Confirms No 27-inch M-series iMac: What's Next?

Apple enthusiasts who were hoping for a new 27-inch iMac with an M-series chip might be in for some disappointment. Apple recently confirmed that it has no plans to release a 27-inch iMac with its in-house Apple Silicon, effectively marking the end of the line for the popular 27-inch Intel-equipped model that was discontinued in 2022.

Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza addressed the company's strategy to The Verge, stating that Apple's primary focus in the iMac lineup will revolve around the 24-inch model. This 24-inch iMac, first introduced in early 2021, has recently received an update with the new M3 processor.

Alternatives to a 27-inch M-series iMac

Apple's recommendation for those longing for a larger display experience is to consider the combination of a 27-inch Studio Display, along with a Mac Studio or Mac Mini. However, this approach necessitates moving away from the all-in-one design of the iMac, opting for a separate computer paired with a 27-inch 5K screen.

This marks a significant shift from the previous era when the 27-inch iMac reigned as Apple's flagship consumer desktop computer, captivating a wide user base that included not only home users but also creative professionals and media companies. The absence of an Apple Silicon-powered 27-inch model has prompted many video editors, developers, and creatives to explore alternative solutions, such as the Mac Studio and MacBook Pro, or even modular desktop PCs.

The 24-inch iMac: A Midway Point

Apple's 24-inch iMac, sporting a 4.5K display, is intended to bridge the gap between the earlier 21-inch 4K versions and the larger 27-inch 5K model. However, it's important to note that the 24-inch iMac does not feature Apple's most high-end processors; instead, it relies on its base model chips.
