MSI Accidentally Leaks AMD Threadripper 3990x; Most Powerful CPU Yet?

AMD launched its third-generation Ryzen and Threadripper CPU series yesterday. Though the complete lineup has been unveiled, the company has not revealed the most powerful Ryzen CPU -- the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. The 64-core 128-thread monstrosity has been accidentally leaked by MSI.

Most Powerful AMD CPU Ever

Even though it is an accidental leak, the available information on the web is just enough to prove that the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is the most powerful CPU that AMD has ever made. Plus, it will be the most expensive AMD CPU as well. The Threadripper 3970X itself costs $1,990.

According to the motherboard introduction video posted by MSI, the upcoming AMD CPU comes with 64 CPU cores and supports hyperthreading. The video was soon taken down from YouTube.

In a screenshot grabbed by wccftech, there are a total of 8 vertical and 16 horizontal lines in the task manager. Doing simple math will reveal that the post on the screen is from a processor with 128 hyper threads.

While announcing the Threadripper 3970X, the company officially confirmed that the CPU supports up to 4 PCIe 4 lanes for faster processing. Considering the specifications of the Threadripper 3970x the Threadripper 3990x is likely to offer a base clock speed of 3.7GHz and boost clock speed of 4.5GHz.

The TDP of the chipset will be upwards of 300W as the 32 core Threadripper has a TDP of 280W. Even the cache is expected to be around 150MB (L2 + L3).

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is likely to hit the market by early 2020 and might carry a price tag of around $2,999, making it the most expensive AMD CPU ever.
