Samsung Launches GDDR7: 40% Faster and 20% More Energy-Efficient Than GDDR6

Samsung has recently unveiled its latest groundbreaking achievement - the GDDR7. This new memory technology boasts impressive improvements over its predecessor, the GDDR6 RAM, making it a significant advancement in the world of data transmission capabilities.

Blazing Speed: 32Gbps per Pin

The highlight of the GDDR7 is its remarkable transmission speed, reaching up to 32Gbps per pin. Compared to the GDDR6's previous cap of 24Gbps, this represents a substantial 33% increase. The total data rate of 1.5 Terabytes per second is also significantly higher, showing a 40% improvement over GDDR6's 1.1 Terabytes per second. This leap in speed opens up a world of possibilities for devices requiring enhanced graphics performance and data-intensive applications.

The increased speed of the GDDR7 can be attributed to the integration of 3-level
Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM3), a cutting-edge technology also used in USB4 and Thunderbolt 5. This modulation technique allows for more efficient data encoding and transmission, resulting in the impressive performance of GDDR7.

In comparison, the GDDR6X, utilized in high-end graphics cards like the Nvidia RTX 3090 and 4090, employs the related PAM4 standard, showcasing the continuous pursuit of technological excellence in the RAM industry.

Power Efficiency Advancements

Beyond its incredible speed, GDDR7 is also more power-efficient. With a 20% improvement over its predecessor, the new RAM technology provides a balance between performance and energy consumption. This is a significant development as power efficiency remains a crucial aspect for modern devices, especially with the growing demand for longer battery life and sustainability.

Optimized for Power-Constrained Devices

Recognizing the need for power-efficient solutions in today's devices, Samsung has developed a low-operating voltage version of GDDR7 tailored specifically for power-constrained devices, such as laptops. Enhanced Heat Dissipation

Addressing concerns about heat generation, Samsung has implemented improvements in the epoxy molding compound (EMC) used to encase the RAM chips. The new EMC exhibits 70% lower thermal resistance compared to the EMC used in GDDR6 packages. This enhancement allows for better heat dissipation, preventing overheating issues and ensuring reliable performance even during intense computing tasks.

Envisioning a Faster Future

Samsung is eager to bring the benefits of GDDR7 to the market and has plans to send out samples of the technology to its customers later this year. This step paves the way for the integration of GDDR7 RAM into various devices, from workstations and PCs to game consoles.
