BYD Atto 3 Electric SUV Crash Tested Before Price Reveal In India

BYD (Build Your Dreams) recently announced its first electric SUV, BYD Atto 3, in India. The Chinese EV manufacturer is currently accepting bookings for its electric vehicle. But, even before the deliveries commence in India, its Euro NCAP crash results are out, which would be beneficial for prospective buyers as well as for those who have booked it already. The BYD Atto 3 is certainly not a tin can and is actually one of the top scorers at the Euro NCAP crash results with a full 5-star safety rating. Let's have a look at it in detail.

BYD Atto 3: Euro NCAP Crash Results

The crash test was performed on the LHD (Left Hand Drive) and the base model of the car. But bear in mind that the BYD Atto 3's base Active trim in Europe is not a stripped-down variant. It packs in advanced safety features such as seven airbags, seat belt pretensioners, child ISOFIX tethers, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

The BYD Atto 3 scored 91 percent rating in adult protection, scoring 34.7 points out of 38 points, and offering good and adequate protection rating to both the driver and passengers. However, the side pole crash test incurred severe damage to the driver's chest region.

For child safety assessment, dummies of kids aged six and ten were used. The EV car scored full 24 points including the frontal impact and lateral impact tests. However, in the child safety features rating, it lost a few points scoring eight out of 13 points due to the lack of a CRS (Child Restraint System).

If you are someone who cares for pedestrians, you would be disappointed to know that the Atto 3 scored 37.5 points out of 72 points or 69 percent. It scored well in head impact while faltering in the pelvis and legs impact areas. The car seems to be having a robust front end and A-pillars that help it achieve a superb crash rating but at the expense of pedestrian protection.

The car's AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) and other safety assist systems fared well with most tests returning about 69% rating. For those not in the know, the AEB and safety assist features are not tested at the Global NCAP tests, where Indian cars are tested. The BYD Atto 3 will be brought to India in a knocked-down avatar, so expect similar levels of crash rating. However, it is advisable to wait till the Indian model is tested as international manufacturers tend to use inferior materials in cars manufactured for India.

BYD Atto 3 Availability In India

BYD didn't announce the prices of the Atto 3 at the unveiling. However, expect it to make an announcement by the end of this year or January 2023. BYD might price it around ₹30 lakhs ex-showroom in India. The electric car manufacturer is also bundling six free services, 6-year RSA, six years or 1.5 lakh kilometers warranty, and an eight years or 1.6 lakh kilometers warranty on the battery pack.
