Exclusive: What’s Next for ASUS? Arnold Su Talks ROG Ally X and More

What's New with the ROG Ally X?

The ROG Ally X has generated buzz with its notable enhancements over its predecessor. Key upgrades include a substantial 80Wh battery, which is double the capacity of the original model's 40Wh battery, allowing for extended gaming sessions. The device now weighs 678 grams, an increase of 70 grams due to the larger battery, but this trade-off offers significantly longer playtime.

Under the hood, the Ally X continues to utilize the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor from the first generation (review), but now it boasts up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM for improved speed and efficiency. Storage options have also been expanded, featuring a 1TB SSD with the capability to upgrade to 4TB thanks to a redesigned motherboard and M.2 2280 SSD slot.

In terms of connectivity, ASUS has introduced two USB Type-C ports, including one Thunderbolt port, replacing the previous XG Mobile port. Additional design improvements include a new black colorway, an extra air vent for better cooling, and enhanced joysticks for precise control.

Exclusive Insights from Arnold Su

Overcoming Challenges with the ROG Ally X's 80Wh Battery

When asked about the integration of an 80Wh battery in the new ROG Ally X, Arnold Su revealed that it was no easy feat. "One of the main challenges was to maintain a similar form factor while keeping the thickness to a minimum," he explained. "The second was keeping the weight increase as low as possible."

To address these challenges, ASUS engineers undertook a complete motherboard redesign. This allowed them to accommodate an 80Wh battery while also incorporating a full-sized M.2 2280 SSD. The result? A mere 11% weight increase despite a much larger battery, more RAM, and a full-sized SSD.

Su emphasized the team's efforts to maintain the device's durability by trimming material around the edges without compromising its ruggedness. The move of macro keys to a separate daughterboard also played a critical role in achieving a lighter and more powerful device.

Differentiating the Windows Experience on ROG Ally X

When discussing how ASUS differentiates the ROG Ally X from other Windows-based handheld gaming consoles, Su pointed to Armory Crate SE (ACSE), the customized software solution. This software, tailored specifically for the ROG Ally series, provides users with an intuitive interface to navigate the Windows environment with ease.

"ACSE is user-friendly enough for newcomers but also offers customization options for experienced gamers," Su said. Features like manual TDP adjustments, support for AMD Fluid Motion Framerates, and custom game profiles set the ROG Ally X apart. "It's a tool that helps both casual and hardcore gamers optimize their gaming experience."

ASUS's Expanding Gaming Portfolio

Su discussed ASUS's broader vision for gaming hardware beyond handheld devices. He mentioned new additions like the ROG Strix G16 and the TUF Gaming A15, which aim to enhance the gaming experience with advanced features. Additionally, the upcoming Zephyrus G14 (2024) will include a powerful new processor, catering to both gamers and creators.

Commitment to Sustainability

In our exchange, Su emphasized ASUS's commitment to sustainability. The company is working towards significant goals such as reducing carbon intensity by 30% by 2025 and achieving 100% renewable energy in Taiwan by 2030. They also aim for a 20% global recycling rate for their products.

ASUS is integrating eco-friendly materials into their product designs and running initiatives like the #DiscardResponsibly campaign, which promotes the proper disposal of electronic waste.

AI and the Future of Gaming

Su expressed excitement about the future of AI in gaming. "AI will transform how we interact with technology, and we're looking forward to integrating these advancements into our products," he said.

He mentioned plans to make AI features more accessible and tailored to various user needs, from gamers to professionals. ASUS is also focused on expanding its presence in the Indian gaming market through initiatives like the ROG Academy and ROG Showdown.
