PS5 Price in India Could Be Hiked Soon as Sony Raises Prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal Globally
Sony will raise prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal worldwide from 2 April 2026. The revised prices mean new PS5 hardware now starts at about $600, with the PS5 Pro close to $900. Sony links the hikes to global economic pressures and higher costs, while players worry that console gaming is drifting out of reach for many households.
The latest rise follows an earlier PS5 price hike in the U.S. in August 2025, when Sony added $50 to the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. Compared with launch in November 2020, the standard PS5 with disc drive now costs $100 more. The PS5 Digital Edition has also climbed by $100, and the PS5 Pro by $150, while PlayStation Portal is up $50.

PlayStation 5 Price Hikes Explained
Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, set out the company’s position on the PlayStation Blog. Tomatis linked the changes directly to broader financial pressures affecting hardware production and distribution. The statement suggested Sony weighed alternatives before settling on higher prices for PS5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal remote player.
Tomatis wrote that the price moves were “a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.” Tomatis added: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”
The blog post also acknowledged the likely reaction from PlayStation users. Tomatis said: “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.” Sony did not provide detailed cost breakdowns, but pointed to rising expenses in several parts of the supply chain.
Affordability Concerns
Player response to the PS5 and PS5 Pro price rises has been fast and largely negative, mixing frustration with resignation. Many comments online highlight that the standard PS5 now costs $600 in practice, compared with the $500 launch price in November 2020. Some buyers say they will delay purchases or turn to older consoles and second-hand hardware.
Analysts are also watching how the higher PS5 and PS5 Pro prices shape the wider games market. Speaking to Edge magazine, reported by PC Gamer, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella warned that game spending is skewing towards wealthier players. Piscatella suggested that the shift risks leaving lower-income players behind as costs of hardware and software increase.
Piscatella said: “A bigger portion of the market is going to people who are more affluent, have higher incomes, and the lower-income parts of the market are really struggling.” Piscatella continued: “That premium gaming space is leaning more and more on the affluent consumer.” The comments mirror growing concern that console gaming may become a hobby for higher earners first.
Wider Console Market Pressures
The PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal price rises sit within a more difficult global backdrop. Markets have been unsettled by U.S. tariffs and the ongoing wars in Iran and Ukraine, which have affected trade routes and component supply. At the same time, the cost of RAM has risen sharply because of a global memory shortage linked to strong AI demand.

Other console makers have already moved in a similar direction. Nintendo increased the price of the original Nintendo Switch in August 2025, and there is concern that the upcoming Switch 2 might launch at a higher level. Microsoft also raised prices for Xbox consoles, controllers and headsets in May 2025, following earlier regional adjustments.
These combined changes raise a broader question for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal buyers. With high-end devices like PS5 Pro now close to $900, commentators are asking whether a mainstream $1,000 console is getting closer. There is no confirmed product at that price, but the upward trend in hardware cost is clear across several manufacturers.
Major Game Launches
The timing of the new PS5 and PS5 Pro prices also draws attention because of upcoming releases. The changes arrive around eight months before GTA 6 is due, a game widely expected to increase demand for current-generation consoles. Rockstar’s title is not planned for PC on release day, so many players may feel pushed towards PS5, PS5 Pro or rival consoles.
For now, Sony is sticking to the message that PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal price rises are driven by economic strain rather than opportunity. The company argues that higher prices support ongoing development of games and hardware, even as some players step away. How many buyers accept these higher costs will become clearer across 2026.
