Microsoft’s Next Xbox Promises a ‘Very Premium, Curated Experience’ With PC-Level Power
It looks like Xbox is headed for its biggest shakeup in years. Microsoft’s gaming division is talking a lot about change lately — and you can feel the buzz. After teaming up with Asus to launch those Xbox-branded handhelds, the ROG Xbox Ally line, the company is already looking ahead.
Xbox president Sarah Bond has started dropping clues about what’s coming, and if you’re an Xbox fan or even just a curious gamer, there’s quite a bit to unpack.

Talking About the Next-Gen Console
In a recent chat with Mashable, Bond hinted at something different for the next Xbox. She dodged direct questions about specs but called it a “very premium, very high-end curated experience.” That’s not the sort of phrase you toss out if you’re just tweaking last year’s hardware. If anything, it suggests an Xbox that’s more like a hybrid; think PC power but wrapped up in a console experience.
The Windows Question
This part is interesting: Microsoft’s handheld ROG Xbox Ally runs Windows, with a full Xbox interface layered on top. Bond mentioned that they’re looking closely at what worked in that handheld, and she didn’t shoot down the idea of a Windows-based console. The company seems to be working with the Windows team to make gaming on that platform feel less like an afterthought.
What does this mean for gamers? For one thing, it could open the doors to running more than just Xbox Store games — potentially, you might see access to storefronts like Steam, EA, and Epic, just like on a gaming PC.
Chasing a Big Leap, Not Just an Upgrade
Microsoft’s not holding back here. Bond described the next Xbox as delivering “the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation.” While that sounds bold, don’t take it as pure PR. The Xbox team appears motivated to push beyond just keeping up with the competition.
They’ve already signed a new partnership with AMD for custom chipsets. And sure, there’s always the race with Sony’s PlayStation, but Microsoft seems less focused on topping the charts and more interested in changing what a console can do.
When Can You Expect the New Console?
Don’t count on picking up a new Xbox tomorrow. Right now, the rumor mill suggests 2027 for the launch, which would line up pretty closely with the rumored timing for Sony’s next PlayStation.
